July 4th Weekend Pier Update

Daily activity:


Thursday 25th: water temp 82.0 NW 5-8mph in the a.m. / 84.2 W 12-15mph. The water was dark Bay water with some floating seaweed. There was one small King Mackerel caught by Jose. Spanish Mackerel, Ladyfish, Hardtails and a few Bonita were caught. Two Tarpon were hooked before sunset. The Spanish bite picked up in the evening as well as a couple of Kings hit bait. Live bait was available- Alewives and Cigar minnows.


Friday: water temp 81.3 WSW 8-10mph in the a.m. / 82.4 S 3-8mph in the p.m. The water was dingy with June grass and Sargassum weed. There were two King Mackerel caught. James T. from Atlanta caught a 15-pound fish at daylight. Then Danny got a “schoolie” in the early morning. A few Spanish Mackerel, Hardtails and Ladyfish were caught during the day, but the Spanish bite was slow. I saw one Pompano caught off the east side near the sandbar. Red Drum were prowling the shallows but were not feeding. There was live bait easily available – Cigar Minnows, Spanish Sardine and Alewives.

 

 


Saturday: water temp 82.4 SW 7-9mph in the a.m. / 84.4 WSW 7-9mph in the p.m. The water was clearing. Dalton decked a Mahi. There was one other Mahi caught. Other bites were slow with a few Spanish Mackerel and Bonita. Ladyfish and Hardtails were there as usual. Live bait was available.

 

 

 

Sunday: water temp 83.1 W 8-11mph in the a.m. / 84.9 WSW 9-13mph wind in the p.m. The water was clean. Spanish Mackerel, Bonita, Hardtails and Ladyfish were caught. After lunch, several small King Mackerel were caught. David shows one of the King decked. Live bait was available.

 

 


Monday: water temp 82.6 N 3-6mph in the a.m. / 85.6 W 9-13mph in the p.m. The water was clean. There were Spanish Mackerel and a few Bonita caught this morning. Brenda shows a sample of the morning activity. The afternoon saw two small King Mackerel decked and a few others missed or lost. Lots of Ladyfish came in late afternoon. “Flipper” was a pest most of the day. Lots of live bait was available – Cigar minnows, Alewives and Spanish Sardine.

 

 


Tuesday: water temp 81.7 N 6-8mph in the a.m. / 82.9 W 12-20mph in the p.m. The water was clean. “Flipper: made his appearance early today and ate both King Mackerel that were hooked. The one Kentucky Dave had was probably 20-pounde and the other one about 7. There were also Spanish Mackerel caught. Midafternoon a thunderstorm with heavy wind and rain blasted us. No Kings were hooked during the storm, but a few Spanish Mackerel were caught. Right after the storm, 4 small Kings were caught and a few more lost. I got one and had the hooks pull on two more on an X-rap. Jose caught two and Nory one. Nory also caught a big Bonita. There were several other Bonita caught along with lots of Ladyfish. Live bait was available – Cigar minnows and Alewives.

 

 


Wednesday 01st. water temp 81.0 ENE 6-9mph in the a.m. / 84.0 S 7-12mph in the p.m.  The water was clean until late afternoon when June grass came in. The shallow water was thick with June grass. There were at least a dozen small King Mackerel hooked with about 9 hitting the deck. Yifeng, from Tampa and Jeff S., show the ones they caught. There were a few Spanish Mackerel, some Hardtails and lots of Ladyfish caught. Live bait was available – Cigar Minnows, Alewives and a few Threadfin Herring. “Flipper: was present part of the day and up to his usual pranks.

 

 


 

Red Tide status: In Northwest Florida over the past week, K. brevis was not observed.
